Lionel Messi Goes To Jail, Fined £1.7m

Barcelona football star Lionel Messi has been sentenced to 21 months in prison over a tax fraud case in Spain.

However, the striker - generally considered the best in the world currently - is unlikely to face any time in jail as a term of under two years in duration, for a non-violent offence, usually results in a period of probation under Spanish law.

The court in Barcelona found the Argentina player and his father, who handles his financial affairs, guilty of three offences.

Jorge Messi was also handed a 21-month prison term and fine of €1.7m (£1.4m).

His son, who is understood to earn £26m in annual salary under his current club contract alone and is said to be worth at least £240m, was told to pay €2m (£1.7m).

Both men have the right to take their sentences to appeal.

They were accused of using tax havens in Uruguay and Belize to hide more than £3m in earnings from image rights from the Spanish tax authorities.

The 29-year old footballer told his trial he knew nothing of how his money was managed and admitted signing documents without reading them.

He told the court last month: "The truth is no, the truth is no, I didn't know.

"As my dad explained earlier I just dedicated myself to playing football, I put my trust in my father, in the lawyers who had decided to manage this thing."

Messi's lawyers said he never examined a series of contracts between 2007 and 2009 which dealt with the income from image rights with companies including Adidas, Pepsi-Cola, Danone, Procter and Gamble, Banco Sabadell and the Kuwait Food Company.

He made a voluntary payment of £3.8m in August 2013 to cover unpaid tax and interest.

Messi - who has been voted World Player of the Year five times - confirmed his international retirement in the run-up to the verdict after Argentina crashed to a defeat against Chile in the final of the Copa America

FIFA Remembers Rashidi Yekini Memorial 4-Years After His Death

On Friday 4 May 2012, at the age of 48, Rasheed Yekini passed away after a brief but serious illness. Nigeria’s record goalscorer (37 goals) ensured his name went down in the history books when he scored the Super Eagles’ first ever FIFA World Cup™ goal at the 1994 finals in the USA in the 3-0 group stage win over Bulgaria.

FIFA.com looks back on his memorable goal and subsequent celebration. Yekini who played for several clubs in Spain, Greece, Portugal and Switzerland, could hardly believe he had scored and spontaneously grabbed the net, shaking it in celebration.

The photo of the 58-time Nigeria international captivated the world and even today the former striker, who in 1993 was the first Nigerian to be voted African Footballer of the Year, remains a respected figure in the global football family.

“Rasheed Yekini was one of the best players at the 1994 FIFA World Cup in the USA,” said former FIFA President Joseph S. Blatter when he learned of Yekini’s death. “Against Bulgaria he scored Nigeria’s first ever FIFA World Cup goal, a strike that will earn him a place in the annals of Nigerian football. He will be sorely missed.”

Sunday Oliseh Appointed Into Fifa's Technical Department

Sunday Oliseh has been appointed to be a part of FIFA's technical Department. He announced this on twitter. Well, we wish him well, so long he doesn`t go about his new job complaining of witchcraft.

Oliseh Quits As Super Eagles Coach

Former Super Eagles captain Sunday Oliseh has resigned as coach of the Super Eagles with immediate effect.

In a letter sent to the Nigeria Football Federation on Thursday, Oliseh tendered his resignation and thanked the NFF for the opportunity to serve the country in the capacity he did.

Oliseh, who took over the Super Eagles job in July 2015, has had a topsy-turvy relationship with the NFF and also had a run-in with a few players.

His tenure as coach was characterized by incessant tiffs with the football ruling house that culminated in an eight minute rant on social media chiding agents, journalists and his assistants whom he claimed where working against him after Nigeria’s ouster at the 2016 CHAN tournament in Rwanda.

Supersport.com scooped that Oliseh sent in his resignation after collecting the back-log of his salaries which were owed him by the NFF.

Dr Mohammed Sanusi, General Secretary of the NFF, confirmed to supersport.com that the former Ajax Amsterdam midfielder has indeed resigned from his post as the coach of the Super Eagles.

“Yes, we have received a letter from him and I can tell you he has resigned as coach of the national team (Super Eagles),”he said.

“I can tell you the content of the letter yet because we haven’t met to deliberate on it. We are in Zurich for the Fifa congress as soon as we are through with the meeting, you will be in the know,”Sanusi added.

Supersport.com will keep you posted as the story develops.
