UK Pledge To Hasten Assets Recovery For Nigeria

A plan to speed up international efforts on asset recovery has been announced by the UK Prime Minister David Cameron at the Anti-Corruption Summit held at Lancaster House, London.

The Global Forum for Asset Recovery will bring together governments and law enforcement agencies to discuss returning assets to Nigeria, Ukraine, Sri Lanka and Tunisia.

Foreign firms that own property in the UK must also declare their assets publicly in a bid to stamp out money-laundering, the government says.
The meeting will be held in the US next year, co-hosted with the UK, and supported by the UN and the World Bank.

Mr Cameron’s plans for a register of foreign companies owning UK property would include those who already owned property in the UK as well as those seeking to buy.

Downing Street said the register would mean “corrupt individuals and countries will no longer be able to move, launder and hide illicit funds through London’s property market, and will not benefit from our public funds”.

It said foreign companies owned about 100,000 properties in England and Wales and that more than 44,000 of these were in London.

David Cameron said cracking down on corruption was needed to “tackle extremism,” adding that people in developing countries wanted justice as much as they wanted clean water and health care. John Kerry, US secretary of State, agreed that corruption fed drug and human trafficking as well as terrorism.

South Africa just lost its spot as Africa’s second largest economy

Once the largest economy on the continent, South Africa’s domestic and political issues have seen it fall to third place behind Nigeria and Egypt, KPMG has warned, using data from the International Monetary Fund (IMF ).

Even though South Africa remains the “continent’s most developed economy, and has a more diversified economic base than the Egyptian economy… its fall from first and now second place amongst the continent’s giants is of great concern,” KPMG Financial Risk Manager Christie Viljoen said, adding “especially as this development is largely attributed to weakness in the rand that, in turn, has largely been as a result of domestic issues”.

“South Africa has been known as the continent’s second-largest economy since Nigeria rebased its gross domestic product (GDP) data in early 2014. However, the IMF World Economic Outlook (WEO) released in mid-April provided more sobering GDP statistics for South Africa. Not only did the multilateral organisation suggest that the South African economy would grow by a mere 0.6% this year, but also that the country is now only the third-largest economy on the continent behind Nigeria and new silver medalist Egypt,” Viljoen said.

“Nigeria’s rebasing exercise some two years ago revealed that the oil-dependent economy was almost twice as big as previously thought. The country’s National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) ensured greater measurement of the informal sector, the inclusion of 46 industries from a previous 33, as well as methodological changes to measuring service sector activity with the rebasing.”

“Backward adjustments to GDP indicated that Nigerian GDP in US dollar terms surpassed its South African equivalent in 2011. By the end of 2015, Nigeria’s GDP was measured at $490 billion compared to South Africa’s estimate of $313 billion,” Viljoen added.

In February is was announced that South Africa attracted the largest amount of start-up funding ($54.5-million) and was the most favoured destination (36%), according to the African Tech Startups Funding Report 2015. This placed it ahead of Nigeria, the continent’s populace country with 170-million people, with $49.4-million, or 24% in investments, and Kenya with $47.3-million (14.4%).

South Africa breathed a sigh of relief on Monday when credit ratings agency Moody's MCO -0.17% left the country’s rating unchanged at Baa2 – but with a negative outlook – after months of fears it would be downgraded to junk status.

This followed the unexpected firing of finance minister Nhlanhla Nene on 9 December 2015, which saw more than $6,6 billion (R100 billion) wiped off government pensions. This was revealed this week by Daniel Matjila, the CEO of state’s pension investment arm, the Public Investment Corporation (PIC), in response to questions in Parliament.

EFCC Operatives Invade FFK Home Once Again, Arrset Domestic Workers

Again, EFCC Operatives Invade Fani-Kayode’s Home

OPERATIVES of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on Thursday invaded the residence of the embattled former Minister of Aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode, his media aide said.

Thursday’s raid on the former minister’s home would be the second in less than a week.

Mr. Fani-Kayode has been in the agency’s custody since he submitted himself to investigators on Monday.

A panic email distributed by Jude Ndukwe, Mr. Fani-Kayode’s media aide, said the operatives entered the building “wielding their guns”.

The full statement reads as follows:

Earlier today, the EFCC invaded the residence of Chief Femi Fani-Kayode even when he was still in their custody. What miffed us most was their mode of operation which was forceful, provocative and dangerous as they wielded their guns with needless threats. The worst is that the invasion was without a warrant as they forced their way in, and after terrifying all the staff at home including the infant, they whisked the laundry man away even though he was later released.

This is the fourth time the EFCC operatives would be invading Chief Fani-Kayode’s residence in just under a week. We condemn this act of executive lawlessness, harassment and intimidation. Chief Femi Fani-Kayode has served this country even at the highest levels and he deserves some courtesy.

We call on the EFCC to endeavour to carry out their functions within the ambit of our laws and stop brazenly betraying the fact that Chief Fani-Kayode is under persecution. The world is watching!
